The cooling water used to directly cool the diesel engine should be clean fresh water, such as rainwater, snowwater, tap water with good quality or clear river water. If well water or other groundwater is used directly, because they contain more minerals, it is easy to form scale in the water cavity of the diesel engine, affecting the cooling effect and causing failure. If only hard water is limited by conditions, it must be softened before it can be used.

There are two commonly used methods of softening cooling water

: ① Boiling the water to precipitate.
