Haixing Power: Why does diesel generator set suffer from cavitation?

Cavitation corrosion means that the surface of the outer wall of the diesel engine wet cylinder liner in contact with the coolant is destroyed into needle-shaped holes. These holes gradually expand and deepen, and finally form deep holes or cracks; the holes are generally clean and have no corrosion products.

Haixing concluded that most people believe that cavitation is caused by high-frequency vibration of the cylinder liner. Mechanical vibration causes changes in coolant pressure, causing bubbles to be generated and burst in the coolant. This process is the cause of cavitation.

Since there is gas dissolved in the coolant, when the high-frequency vibration of the cylinder reduces the local pressure of the coolant to a certain critical value, the gas dissolved in the coolant is separated in the form of bubbles, and these bubbles flow to the high-pressure area. Collapse occurs when the pressure exceeds the bubble pressure. The gas in the bubble state re-liquefies or dissolves in the coolant, and the volume suddenly decreases. The coolant moves towards the center of the bubble at high speed, causing a water hammer phenomenon, which generates impact force and high temperature, and spreads to the surroundings in the form of pressure waves at supersonic speed. When acting on the outer surface of the cylinder liner, it will produce great impact, extrusion and high temperature. Under the repeated action of this force, the outer surface of the cylinder liner of the diesel generator becomes fatigued and gradually falls off, showing pitting and needle-like holes, which gradually expand as cavitation progresses.
