The piston ring is the core component inside the diesel generator engine. It completes the sealing of the combustion chamber gas together with the cylinder, piston, cylinder wall, etc. Because piston rings are affected by high temperature, high pressure and reciprocating motion during long-term use, wear will increase. Therefore, piston rings are generally made of multi-alloy cast iron that is wear-resistant, high-temperature resistant and has high mechanical strength.
Although the piston ring is made of multi-element alloy material, use will still cause wear of the piston ring. When the wear of the piston ring reaches a certain level, the elasticity of the piston ring begins to slowly decrease, and the subsequent gaps, side gaps and The backlash will also gradually increase, which will have a weakening effect on the sealing performance of the combustion chamber. This will cause the diesel in the combustion chamber to be incompletely burned, resulting in increased carbon deposits in the piston rings. So, what are the reasons that will increase the wear of piston rings? How can we avoid it? Now Haixing Power is here to answer the question for you.
Reasons why diesel generator sets aggravate the wear of piston rings
1. The generator piston or connecting rod is abnormal, causing abnormal wear of the piston ring. Piston wear causes excessive cylinder clearance and connecting rod deformation
2. The hardness of the generator piston ring and the cylinder wall are too different, that is, the piston ring material does not match the cylinder wall.
3. Abrasion caused by generator combustion products, engine oil deterioration, and various abrasives. Engine oil is the engine oil of diesel generators. When the oil enters the combustion chamber, it will form black carbon deposits. When the air filter is not working properly, the air entering the cylinder will combine with dust, and the metal debris generated by wear will cause abrasive wear.
4. When assembling, the piston ring is installed backwards or incorrectly; improper opening clearance will cause the piston ring to break; the ring opening is not reasonably evenly distributed, the light leakage between the piston ring and the cylinder wall is too large, and there are too many light leakage parts, which will reduce the cylinder pressure.
5. When the diesel generator is in use, there is insufficient cooling water and the temperature of the diesel generator is too high, which significantly reduces the piston ring function. At this time, the piston rings, pistons and cylinders will be damaged.
Methods to avoid piston ring damage in diesel generator sets
1. Use a screwdriver to touch the cylinder head. If there is a vibration, it means that the piston ring (the first gas ring) makes a sound when it hits the cylinder shoulder.
2. Observe whether the pulsating smoke from the exhaust pipe and the oil filling port is consistent with the sound of the piston. If they match, it means that the piston ring and ring groove are severely worn, causing the piston ring to leak.
3. Use a screwdriver to do a single-cylinder oil cutoff test. If the sound is reduced but does not disappear, and the sound is dull, it indicates that it is a piston ring sound. Remove the fuel injector, add an appropriate amount of engine oil into the cylinder from the fuel injector hole, then reinstall the fuel injector, and start the diesel engine. If the sound disappears within a short period of time, it means that the piston ring and its ring groove are seriously worn.
To sum up, when we usually inspect and maintain the diesel generator set, we should pay close attention to whether there is any abnormality in the piston link of the generator, so that we can detect it early and solve it in time to avoid the impact caused by abnormal wear of the piston ring. existGenerator setIf you have any questions about use or maintenance, please consult the technical personnel of Haixing Power.
