The piston ring is the core component inside the diesel generator set engine. It is used together with the cylinders, pistons, cylinder walls, etc. to seal the combustion chamber gas. Because the piston ring is affected by high temperature and high pressure and reciprocating movement during long-term use, the wear will be aggravated. Therefore, the piston ring is generally made of multi-alloy cast iron that is resistant to wear, high temperature and has high mechanical strength.
Although the piston ring is made of multi-alloy material, it will still cause wear of the piston ring. When the piston ring wears to the corresponding level, the elastic force of the piston ring begins to gradually decrease, and the gaps, side gaps and back gaps will gradually increase, which will have a weakening effect on the sealing performance of the combustion chamber. This will cause the diesel in the combustion chamber to be unable to be completely burned, thereby increasing carbon deposits in the piston ring. So, what are the reasons that aggravate the wear of the piston ring? How can we avoid it? Let’s answer it for everyone below.
Causes of diesel generator sets aggravate the wear of the piston ring
1. The abnormality of the generator piston or connecting rod, causing abnormal wear of the piston ring. The piston wear causes too large cylinder gap and deformation of the connecting rod
2. The hardness of the generator piston ring and the hardness of the cylinder wall are too large, that is, the material of the piston ring does not match the cylinder wall.
3. Generator combustion products, engine oil deterioration, and abrasion caused by various abrasives. Engine oil is the oil of a diesel generator. When the engine oil penetrates into the combustion chamber, it will form black carbon deposits. When the air filter does not work properly, there will be dust in the air entering the cylinder. The metal debris generated by the wear will cause wear of the abrasives.
4. When assembling, the piston ring is installed in reverse or incorrectly; improper opening gap will cause the piston ring to break; the ring port is not properly distributed, the light leakage of the piston ring and the cylinder wall is too large, and there are too many light leakage parts, causing the cylinder pressure to drop.
5. The cooling water is insufficient when the diesel generator is used, and the temperature of the diesel generator is too high, which significantly reduces the function of the piston ring. At this time, the piston ring, piston and cylinder will be damaged.
Method for avoiding damage to the piston ring of the diesel generator set
1. Use a driver to touch the cylinder head. If there is a sense of vibration, it means that the piston ring (first gas ring) hits the cylinder shoulder.
2. Observe whether the pulsating smoke at the exhaust pipe and the oil port of the engine matches the sound of the piston. If it matches, it means that both the piston ring and the ring groove are worn seriously, resulting in a sound of air leakage from the piston ring.
3. Use a driver to perform a single cylinder oil break test. Listen to the sound that is lightened but does not disappear, and the sound is dull, which means that it is a piston ring sound. Remove the fuel injector, fill the cylinder with an appropriate amount of oil from the injector hole, then install the re-injector, and start the diesel engine. If the sound disappears in a short time, it means that the piston ring and its ring groove are seriously worn.
To sum up, when checking and maintaining diesel generator sets, we must pay close attention to whether there are any abnormalities in the piston links of the generator, so that early detection and timely resolution can be found and resolved, and avoid any impact caused by abnormal wear of the piston ring.
