Laying undersea cables to carry electricity to Pulau Tekong to replace dieseldynamo, saving the Ministry of National Defense 8 million yuan in two years.
Before July last year, the military camp on Pulau Tekong relied on generators for power, and eight National Servicemen were sent to inspect it to add diesel. The generator requires 6,000 liters of diesel fuel to power each megawatt hour of electricity and also releases 425 pounds of nitrogen oxide.
ThesedynamoBuilt in the 1990s, it sometimes gets 'emotional'. It breaks down an average of three or four times a year, and each time it takes at least two hours to repair.
Lieutenant Colonel Lan Xiaokai (38 years old), director of the Logistics Division of the Army's 9th Comprehensive Division/Infantry Headquarters, said in an interview: 'There are no technicians stationed on Tekong Island who know how to repair generators. If the generator goes out of condition, you have to repair it.' Deployed from the main island of Singapore, this will affect the operation of facilities and military training on the island.'
The Army Basic Military Training School is located on Tekguang Island, and 5,000 to 6,000 soldiers usually receive training on the island.
As the price of diesel used in the engines continues to rise, and the nitrous oxide released causes air pollution and is harmful to human health, the Army Headquarters is exploring how to deliver electricity to Pulau Tekong more efficiently.
In 2004, the Army and the National Defense Science and Technology Agency collaborated to explore the feasibility of laying cables under the sea to transmit electric current. After discussions, work began in August of the same year.
Spending two years laying submarine cables
Pulau Tekong is about 5 kilometers away from Changi in the east of Singapore's main island. Army and Defense Science and Technology Agency personnel explored the seabed topography between the two places and dug trenches for laying cables.
