Current status of supporting extra large displacement diesel engines and complete vehicles
Since 2008, some new 12L and 13L extra-large displacement diesel engines have been launched by various diesel engine factories. As a result, my country's extra-large displacement heavy-duty engines above 10L have begun to form a large-scale product cluster.13L is only one step away from the displacement level (15L) that can be developed and produced on a large scale in the field of automotive diesel engines.Because the displacement continues to increase, the size of the diesel engine will be too large, which is not conducive to matching the entire vehicle and will not create large-scale market demand.Diesel engines above 15L are generally only suitable for a small number of vehicles.The world's most powerful diesel engine, the D16G, launched by Volvo this year, has a displacement of only 16L and 700 horsepower (522kW).
At present, the situation of manufacturers and supporting complete vehicles of diesel engines above 10L in my country is as follows:
Xi'an Cummins ISM11 series (10.8L) - mainly supporting Shaanxi Heavy Duty Truck, SAIC Iveco Hongyan, Beiqi Foton Auman, Anhui Valin, JAC, Xiamen Jinlong, Zhengzhou Yutong, etc.
FAW Jiefang Xichai: CA6DN (12.5L), CA6DM (11L) - mainly supporting FAW Jiefang J6 semi-trailer tractor.
Weichai Power: WD12 (11.6L), WP12 (11.6L) - mainly supporting Shaanxi Heavy Duty Truck, Beiqi Foton, FAW Jiefang, SAIC Iveco Hongyan, Beiben Heavy Duty Truck, and Huanghai Bus.

Shanghai Hino: P11C (10.5L) - mainly supporting China National Heavy Duty Truck, Beiqi Foton, Shaanxi Heavy Duty Truck, SAIC Iveco Hongyan, Valin, Xiamen Kinglong, Zhengzhou Yutong, and Shanghai Huizhong.
Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle Engine Factory: Renault DCI11 (11.1L) - mainly used in Dongfeng Tianlong and Dongfeng Liuqi.

Dongfeng Cummins: ISZ (13L) - will be released at the end of 2009 or early 2010, and is expected to be mainly equipped with Dongfeng Tianlong series.
Beiqi Foton: Mercedes-Benz OM457 (11.967L) - a joint venture project. The engine will be trial-produced at the end of 2011 and the complete vehicle will be put into production in mid-2012.It is expected that this engine will be mainly equipped with Foton Auman models.SAIC Fiat Hongyan introduces and produces Fiat Cursor9, and will introduce its 10.3L and 13L diesel engines in the future according to market needs.It can be seen from this that diesel engines with extra large displacement of 10L or above have been distributed in almost all mainstream diesel engine companies in my country.In addition, the 15L displacement diesel engine developed by Yuchai has been tested for more than 20,000 hours. This model is expected to be matched with ships and engineering machinery in advance.Application in the automotive field will take at least two years.At the same time, some engine companies have started research and development of 8-cylinder diesel engines with larger displacement.

Diesel engines above 10L buck the trend and rise

Monitoring statistics show that the current market demand for diesel engines above 11L is not large.Weichai's WD12 series (compliant with National II emission standards) has been in production for three years. Due to its early launch, it has only sold about 34,000 units when there are almost no domestic competitors in the market, of which the proportion of supporting construction machinery exceeds 50%. (About 15,000 units are actually used in automobile accessories).Compared with 9~10L displacement diesel engines, production and sales volume are very small.The main reason that attracts various companies to buy Matt large-displacement diesel engines is that this type of engine used to rely on imports and was relatively profitable.According to statistics, imported diesel engines with a displacement of 10L or above are mainly used in tractors and luxury buses made by Qianmen, Xiamen Kinglong, Yutong, Seewo and Zhongtong. The selling prices of such buses are more than 800,000 yuan.Imported diesel engines have become one of the highlights of advertising and marketing for these models.

Technical sources of extra-large displacement models


Through careful analysis of the technical sources of extra-large displacement diesel engines above 10L, it can be seen that on the one hand, independent development efforts are increasing.For example, FAW Jiefang Xichai, Weichai, China National Heavy Duty Truck, Yuchai, etc. all consulted or cooperated with technology companies and conducted independent development.Some models with imported technologies, such as Renault DCI11 and Deutz TCD2015V06, have also been adapted and improved by Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle Engine Factory and Huachai based on the characteristics of the Chinese market.At the same time, the background of large groups with models above 10L is becoming more and more obvious.Cummins and Mercedes-Benz diesel engines are imported from abroad, and the project itself is part of their overall strategy.Even the seemingly isolated Shanghai Hino is no longer isolated. Competitive Landscape of Extra Large Displacement Diesel Engines

Weichai is the first engine manufacturer to launch 12L diesel engines. Whether it is the WD12 series with National II emission standards or the WP12 series with National III emission standards, it has a solid foundation in the market.Especially when its WD12 came out, there were almost no competitors and the market response was very good.After the National III standard WP12 left the factory, 12L machines from some companies have been put on the market. WP12 has obviously encountered strong opponents, and there is a huge gap in market sales compared with WD12. Yuchai is a Chinese diesel engine company, but Yuchai’s competitive engines are basically in the mid-power segment.
Judging from the sales situation in 2009, Yuchai's growth rate was not as good as that of Quanchai, Laidong, Yunnei and other companies due to national policies that mainly supported diesel engines for agricultural vehicles and low-end light trucks. Therefore, Yuchai's The current situation is not consistent with the trend of the diesel engine market 'developing towards both light and heavy-duty ends.' As for light engines, the booming sales of low-end agricultural diesel engines are the result of stimulating the economy under the background of the financial crisis. They are phased and will not last. In terms of low power, Yuchai is an upgrade of the YC4F model, and it is also vigorously researching diesel engines for passenger cars. However, under the current policy environment, the domestic and export prospects of passenger car diesel engines are not optimistic. In view of the good sales of the YC6M heavy-duty engine, Yuchai decided to develop it. Yuchai has invested heavily in the research and development of 13L diesel engines. However, Yuchai is independent of the vehicle system and is much more difficult to support than Dongfeng Renault, Xichai and Weichai. The Yuchai YC6M model is installed in Dongfeng Tianlong. It has fallen sharply since 2009. Therefore, in the future, the YC6K 13L diesel engine will mainly target bus companies such as King Long, Yutong, and Huanghai that do not have sources of diesel engines.
Cummins' ISM11 diesel engine was originally supposed to be produced by Dongfeng Cummins. However, as early as the joint venture between Dongfeng and Nissan, Dongfeng introduced Renault's DCI11 diesel engine, which was produced at the commercial vehicle engine plant of Dongfeng Co., Ltd., a joint venture between Dongfeng and Nissan.What highlights this arrangement is the triangular relationship between Dongfeng-Nissan-Renault. Renault holds 44.4% of Nissan's shares, and Nissan holds 15% of Renault's shares. Jiefang has a large number of models with 300 horsepower or more (221kW) equipped with Weichai WD12 and WP12, which is obviously very inconsistent with Jiefang's industry status. Therefore, it has always been Jiefang's wish to equip its own high-power diesel engines.It can be said that the 6DM and 6DN that liberated Xichai shouldered a more arduous task.It is expected that Jiefang will help the J6 model and supporting 6DN and 6DM diesel engines to compete in the market.However, compared with other diesel engines of the same displacement, except for Yuchai's YC6K, the technical confidence and reliability of Xichai models are slightly insufficient.

From the perspective of supporting relationships, only Weichai, China National Heavy Duty Truck, Xichai, Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle Engine Factory, Huachai, and Xi'an Cummins have relatively stable 12L diesel engine channels, but even so, their sales are very limited. Therefore, Shanghai Hino, The sales of Yuchai and other large-displacement diesel engines will not see a significant improvement for at least three years.

What is worth looking forward to in the 12L engine market is the OM457 diesel engine, a joint venture product between Foton and Mercedes-Benz. Under the current market environment, it is expected that this model will not have much sales in the domestic truck field, but the Mercedes-Benz OM457 diesel engine Whether equipped with domestic luxury buses or Auman heavy-duty trucks for export, relying on the existing global market networks of Foton and Mercedes-Benz, this truly market-significant model will perform well.
